He wishes to be professional partners to help further your career in the music industry. We are located in the heart of the downtown area in Minneapolis, MN. TRACKING PRICES

Prices are set by each song. We allow two hours of drum tracking for each song. If you exceed that we charge an extra $15 dollars for every hour after that. We also offer the packages listed below in attempt to get the most bang for your buck.

Pre-Production

Everything will be set up in the studio when you get there for the scheduled session time. The more information you can give us will let us be more prepared for the session. (Some exceptions may apply.)

1. Schedule (Get dates for):
   • A band practice or two
   • If a show is coming up soon
   • When is the recording taking place?

2. We will show up to one or more of your practices:

• Get the Bpm
• Write down ideas
• Gather contact info (If not already gathered)
• Get the feel of the band

3. We will send you a list of all the mics:

• Which ones did you want  to use?
• Which instrument did you want it on?

MIXING PRICES

At AM-J Studios, we are trying to give you the biggest bang for your buck. So, we have created these four groups so you can maybe save a little money.

If you want to mix everything yourself with your own gear = $0

If you want to mix everything yourself with my gear = $10/Hour

If you want our team to mix it with our gear = $20/Hour

If you want our team to mix it for you with your gear = $30/Hour

How to Pay?

You are responsible for paying half of the price of your package choice before the session starts and then pay the rest when we deliver the final product to you. Studio Etiquette 101

So you finally got that engineer job at the studio you have always wanted to work at. Here I have gave some insight of what it’ll be like and some tips/tricks that will get you past day one.

TIME

1. Respect everyones time. This means don’t be late, have everything setup before the artist gets there, and don’t take 8 smoke breaks for an hour session. All of these things seem like a good way to milk extra money out of the artist but in reality it’s a fast track to lose business. The session should start when the artist walks in because thats when the clock starts rolling for your payment. If you’re not setup before they get there they will just sit there for the half hour it takes you to get ready. That is disrespectful. Keep in mind you’re making their dreams come true so you need a level of trust. It’s hard to get trust if one of you doesn’t respect the other.

BE CLEAN

2. This has to deal with the respect again. If you respect the space you love to work in then your clients are more likely to love it as well. A few tips would be clean up any trash or dirty dishes laying around, leave the studio as clean as you found it, and make sure to clean your pop filter every once in a while. Also make sure your personal hygiene is taken care of as well. I can’t tell you how many sessions I have been in where one dude smells unbearable bad. Keep in mind you are in small rooms with these people so make sure to use deodorant and maybe take a shower. Gum is always a great thing to have.

COMMUNICATION

3. This is probably the most important thing you can do to get what you want out of the artist. Most artist don’t want to hear about the technical stuff they just want to lay down their song and get the hell out of there. So don’t bore them with it. If you have some input or advice think about how you will tell them so you don’t bore them or seem condescending. In between each take make sure to talk to them and let them know what is going on. It could be anything but you want to keep the momentum going.

YOUR GOAL

4. Keep in mind you are doing the artist a service so don’t give them creative suggestions unless they are completely okay with it, or if it’s something like “take a few steps away from the mic”. Your job is basically to capture the best sonic and creative performance possible, nothing more. It is always good to ask if they are open to suggestions at the beginning of or maybe even before a session.

This job is not like anything else in the world but the personality traits that you must have are the same for any business.

How To Make A Press Kit For Your Band?

What You Will Need!

1. Cover Letter
2. One-Sheet
3. Demo

Cover Letter

You need to create a brief note about why you think your music will matter and be of interest to the contact. You can have a short version of your bands bio (one to three paragraphs). You have one chance to impress these people and it might be your last chance. Make sure everything is spelled CORRECTLY, especially contacts name(s), name of the radio station(s), or the name of the venue(s).

One-Sheet

Don’t over think this page it pretty straight forward. It basically summarizes EVERYTHING about the band on one page. It will contain things like a brief bio, your logo (if you don’t have one you can contact me and I will make one for you), your contact information, a song list that highlights the one you put on your demo, a short list of upcoming shows and a professional picture of the band (make sure all band members are included in the photo). No matter who you send it to it should be printed out 8 by 10 inch glossy. If you are sending it to an A&R person you should also include a colored picture. It is super important that you sneak your band’s website or social media links on this page. Also make sure to include any reviews that you have received. It is recommended that you include only key statements of the review.

Paying attention to the design is another huge part of this sheet. If you’re not a designer get someone who is, or at least has experience putting a one-sheet together. Being brief is the key to make everything fit. If you can’t get it all to fit you need to edit the content until it does.

DEMO CD

This CD should have three songs on it. It should be sent in a professional looking jewel case with your logo as the cover. The songs don’t have to be million dollar studio quality but it should be clear and get the message across. It should include the bands name and the titles of the three songs on the CD. Make sure you don’t choose three of your songs that sound the same. Pick one fast song, one slow song, and one in between. This is just so they know how versatile you can be.

Keep In Mind

The people you are sending these press kits to are very busy people so keeping things brief and interesting is the key.

It Might Get Loud Movie Review

                         In our classes last quarter we were watching a film called “It Might Get Loud”. It was about these three really cool and unique guitarist that have played or still do play in famous bands. The three guys were The Edge from U2, Jimmy Page from Led Zeppelin, and Jack White from The White Stripes and The Raconteurs. It told all of their stories of how and why they became guitar players.

I really liked Jack White’s perspective on life and music. The whole minimal lifestyle thing is pretty cool. Watching him build that guitar with one string on his porch was amazing. He believed that people cared to much about having a nice guitar before they could actually play it. If you can’t play it’ll be bad either way but if you good it’ll sound good no matter what.

The Edge was really cool as well. He was the polar opposite person to Jack White. He likes to listen to the parts he can play using a crazy amount of effects because it makes it sound like two guitars are being played at once.

Jimmy Page all I have to say is this man is a legend. You already knew that though. He played in Led Zeppelin! He seemed like a really down to earth dude. He was the most traditional guitar player out of the group.

Out of the three Jack White is the youngest person in the person but that just means he has the most to prove. Jimmy Page and The Edge both play the role of sidekick to the legendary vocalist that are the frontman of their respective bands. While Jack White seems play the role of both the sidekick and frontman. The jam sessions in this movie were the coolest thing ever. It feels like you were really there watching these three legendary men throw out all of their emotions into this amazing jam. If you play guitar it made you want to join in on it. If you don’t play guitar it’d probably make you want to learn. It showed you that they are still people as well because they weren’t arguing like I’m from Led Zeppelin so that makes me better than you. I really like to see famous artist with their ways of thinking. Overall it was a really cool story about the rise of these amazing guitarists.

The camera work was really cool. They changed the style of the shots on the person they were following in that shot. It was a clever Idea. The shots during the jam sessions just intensified the emotion and raw talent of the performance. The way they shot it felt like you were almost there. The sound on the movie was pretty great as well. It didn’t sound like we were sitting in a lecture hall listening to a movie. It sounded as if they were performing for us in the lecture hall. I really enjoyed just about everything this movie had to offer. I would give it a five out of five if I could. It will also be going on my list of movies to buy.

Hello, I am Kody Flynn.

I’m originally from the Quad Cities, but now I am living in Minneapolis, MN.

I am a current student at the Institute of Production and Recording. (IPR)

I am a graphic designer, an audio engineer, and a video editor.

I have a strong passion for music. It’s like air I breathe.
